Week 8 of Pregnancy: Fingers and Toes
Week 8 is where pregnancy stops being an abstraction and becomes a daily logistics problem. The baby is about the size of a ping-pong ball and growing fingers and toes. Your partner is likely in the roughest stretch of the first trimester, and this is where what you actually do matters more than what you say.
- Take two recurring chores permanently, without announcing it or asking which ones she wants.
- Move cooking smells out of her airspace and keep water and plain snacks stocked everywhere she sits.
- Book time off for the first antenatal appointment and arrive with written questions.
- If she cannot keep fluids down or is losing weight, call the midwife or doctor the same day.
▸What is happening at eight weeks
At 8 weeks pregnant the embryo is roughly a centimetre and a half long. The paddles that were hands and feet are separating into fingers and toes, the heart has been beating for a fortnight, and the basic architecture of every major organ is being laid down.
This is the tail end of the most structurally intense period of the whole pregnancy. Almost everything that will exist is being built right now. It is still officially an embryo, and graduates to fetus in another two weeks.
None of it is visible from outside. Internally this is the biggest thing that has ever happened to either of you; externally there is no bump and no announcement. You are both carrying something enormous in total silence.
▸Why the sickness usually peaks around now
Pregnancy sickness is badly named. It ignores mornings, frequently worsens in the evening, and for many people is at its most intense somewhere across weeks 8 to 11. It usually arrives alongside a sense of smell turned up far enough to make your cooking and the inside of the fridge genuinely intolerable.
She may be down to a short list of foods she can face. Do not campaign for a balanced plate this month. Keeping food and fluid down is the entire objective, and if she is worried about how little she is managing, that is a question for her midwife or doctor.
There is a line where sickness stops being ordinary. If she cannot keep fluids down for a day, is losing weight, feels faint, or her urine is very dark, call the midwife or doctor the same day. Severe pregnancy sickness is a recognised, treatable condition and not something to tough out.
▸Remove work from her plate without being asked
The most useful thing you can do in week 8 is remove decisions, not offer help. Let me know if you need anything hands the admin straight back to her. Pick two recurring jobs and own them permanently: the food shop, the bins, the kitchen after dinner.
Then manage the smells. Cook with the door shut and the extractor on, or cook while she is out. Keep water and dry snacks within reach of the bed and the sofa, restocked without prompting. And run the social cover, because she is not public yet: you are the one who invents the excuse for leaving early and takes the blame for it.
▸The first real antenatal appointment
In many health systems the first proper antenatal appointment lands between weeks 8 and 12, and it is usually the longest of the pregnancy: full medical history for both families, blood pressure, blood tests covering things like blood group and rhesus status, and a conversation about dating. Depending where you live it may be a midwife, a family doctor, or an OB.
Go, and take the notes yourself, because she is answering the questions and cannot also transcribe the answers. Use it to build your calendar: when the dating scan will be, what screening is offered where you are, what has to be decided and by when, and who to call out of hours.
▸What she is going through
- Nausea and exhaustion near their peak.
- She may be surviving on 4 foods. That's fine.

▸Questions dads actually ask
Is it normal to feel useless when your partner is 8 weeks pregnant?
Normal and close to universal. She has physical evidence every hour of the day; you have a positive test and a date in a calendar. Dads commonly run a trimester behind emotionally. The bond tends to arrive through doing rather than feeling, which is why taking real jobs off her plate works on both of you.
How can I help my wife with morning sickness at 8 weeks?
Control the environment rather than the sickness. Take over cooking and keep the smells away from her, keep water and plain food permanently within arm's reach, and stop offering things she has already rejected. If she cannot keep fluids down, is losing weight or feels faint, call the midwife or doctor.
What if her pregnancy symptoms suddenly disappear at 8 weeks?
Symptoms fluctuate day to day for lots of people, and intensity is not a scoreboard. But nobody should be sitting at home trying to interpret a change alone. If she has noticed something that worries her, or there is any bleeding or pain, that call goes to the midwife or doctor rather than a search engine.
