Week 9 of Pregnancy: Starting to Look Human
At 9 weeks pregnant the embryo starts to look like a small person rather than a cluster of buds. For you, this is the week the emotional side of the job gets real. Two things deserve your attention: learning how to be useful when she is upset, and doing the unglamorous homework on your paternity leave.
- Ask whether she wants solutions or company, then do exactly what she answers.
- Read the actual paternity leave policy and put the notice deadline in your calendar.
- Stop keeping score; nothing said on a hard week 9 evening goes in the ledger.
- If low mood or anxiety persists for weeks, suggest telling the midwife or doctor.
▸Week 9: recognisably a person
The baby is about the size of a squash ball, a shade over two centimetres. The head is still large relative to the body, the limbs are lengthening, and the tail that made earlier scans look faintly reptilian has gone. Basic versions of all the major organs are present and will now grow rather than form.
There is spontaneous movement in there already, small and jerky and entirely involuntary. She will not feel any of it for months. Movement you can feel is a second-trimester event and often later still in a first pregnancy, so its absence now means nothing.
Outwardly, week 9 pregnancy looks like nothing. What she may notice is bloating, a waistband that has become an enemy, and a bra that no longer fits. That is not the bump yet, and telling her it is will not go the way you hope.
▸The emotional weather is real, and it is chemical
Hormone levels are shifting faster now than at almost any other point in adult life, and that genuinely affects mood regulation. Add broken sleep, weeks of nausea, and the load of keeping an enormous secret from everyone she works with, and the volatility stops looking mysterious. It is a physiological state, not a personality change, and it is not aimed at you.
Your part is not to keep score. Do not bank grievances for later, do not point out that she said the opposite yesterday, and never narrate what you think is causing it. Nothing detonates faster than a man explaining her own body to her.
There is a real line to watch. Low mood or anxiety that does not lift, that is present most days for weeks, or that is stopping her functioning is worth raising with the midwife or doctor. Depression and anxiety in pregnancy are common and treatable, and the partner is often the one who notices first.
▸Learn the one question that actually works
When she tells you something is wrong, the default instinct is to fix it. Half the time she is not presenting a problem for triage, she is telling you what her day was like and wants company in it. Solving it quickly reads as wanting the conversation over with.
So ask: do you want me to help fix this, or do you just want me to listen? It sounds mechanical the first time and works anyway. The critical part is what comes next, because asking and then fixing it regardless is worse than never asking. If the answer is listen, then listen properly, with your phone face down and no solutions smuggled in at the end disguised as questions.
▸Do the paternity leave homework now
Find out what leave you are genuinely entitled to. Not what a colleague thinks. Find the actual policy document and read the government rules for where you live alongside it, because statutory entitlement and company policy are separate things that stack in confusing ways.
The specifics that matter: how much is paid and at what rate, whether it can be split into blocks, how much notice you must give and by which week, and what happens if the baby arrives early. That last one catches people out, because notice deadlines are usually tied to the due date rather than the birth. Get the facts before you tell your employer anything, and agree the timing of that conversation with her first.
▸What she is going through
- Mood swings are hormonal, not personal.
- Bloating and waistband complaints.

▸Questions dads actually ask
Why is my wife so emotional at 9 weeks pregnant?
Because hormone levels are changing rapidly, she has likely been nauseated and sleeping badly for weeks, and she is carrying a secret she cannot discuss at work. That combination lowers anyone's threshold. Treat it as a physiological state rather than a mood to be managed, and never suggest out loud that the hormones are talking.
Should I tell my boss my partner is pregnant before 12 weeks?
Your call, and there is no rule. Some men tell a manager early to get leave paperwork moving or because the job needs planning around; others wait until after the dating scan. Agree the timing with your partner first, since it is her news too, and check whether any leave deadlines make early notice worthwhile.
Can dads get pregnancy symptoms?
Yes, and it has a name. Sympathetic pregnancy, or couvade, covers nausea, weight gain, disturbed sleep and mood changes in expectant fathers. It often appears around the third month and typically fades after the birth. Telling her usually lands as solidarity. Competing with her symptoms out loud does not.
