▸Common questions

When should the hospital bag be packed?

The NHS suggests packing at least 3 weeks before the due date, because only 1 in 20 babies arrive on their due date. ACOG suggests leaving the bag somewhere handy, such as a hall closet or the car trunk.

What should a dad pack in his hospital bag?

The NHS list for birth partners: a change of clothes, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant, phone and charger, a camera, snacks and drinks, swimwear for a birth pool, any medicines, spare glasses or contacts, and change for the car park and vending machine.

Do we need the car seat at the hospital?

Yes, for the trip home. In the US, NHTSA says a child under 1 should always ride rear-facing, and certified technicians can check your installation. In the UK, height-based seats must be rear facing until the child is over 15 months, and front airbags must be off before fitting a rear-facing seat in a front seat.

What is different for a US hospital?

Bring your insurance card and photo ID, and ask your hospital whether you can pre-register before the due date so check-in is quicker. UK dads need coins or a parking app for the hospital car park.
