Week 15 of Pregnancy: Practice Breathing
Week 15 is where a lot of dads finally exhale. The worst of the first trimester is usually behind you, the bump is arriving, and for the first time there is room to plan instead of just cope. Use it. The things worth booking this week are the ones that fill up first.
- Book a childbirth class this week; the convenient slots go first.
- Start car seat, stroller and crib research now and buy nothing yet.
- Learn what round ligament pain feels like so you stay calm when it hits.
- Bleeding, persistent pain, or vomiting that stops fluids going down always gets a call to her midwife or doctor.
▸The baby is practising how to breathe
At 15 weeks pregnant the baby is moving amniotic fluid in and out of the developing airways. This is not breathing in any useful sense: there is no air in there, and oxygen comes across the placenta. It is rehearsal. The movement helps the lungs build the branching structure they will need on day one.
Lungs are the slowest major system to finish, which is why prematurity is largely a lung problem. Elsewhere the baby is about the size of a field-hockey ball, roughly 10 cm and around 70 grams. The bones are hardening, the legs have outgrown the arms, and fine hair is appearing on skin still thin enough to see through.
▸The good stretch, but do not assume it
The second trimester has a reputation as the easy one, and for many people it earns it. Nausea eases, energy returns, food becomes appealing again. If that is what is happening in your house, spend it: this is the best window in the whole pregnancy for travel, and for the boring admin nobody wants to face at 34 weeks.
It is not universal. Some people are still vomiting at week 15, and severe, persistent vomiting is a recognised condition that gets treated rather than endured. If she cannot keep fluids down, is losing weight, or feels faint, that is a call to her midwife or doctor. And do not tell her the second trimester is supposed to be easier.
▸Book the class before it books out
Childbirth classes fill months ahead in most places, and the evening and weekend slots, the ones you can actually attend, go first. Look now and book for the late second or early third trimester. Ask her care provider what they recommend. Hospital-run, independent, in person or online all work; the one you both turn up to works best.
Same logic on the big three: car seat, stroller, crib. You are buying nothing this week. You are finding out what fits your car, what fits your hallway, and what the current safety standards are where you live. That reading turns the eventual purchase into one focused afternoon instead of six weeks of open browser tabs.
▸The twinges start, and what gets a call
Round ligament pain often shows up around now: a sharp, short pull low on one side when she stands up too fast, rolls over, or sneezes. The ligaments supporting the growing uterus are stretching. Knowing the name is the point, so the first time she gasps and grabs her side you are the calm one in the room.
What does not belong in that bucket: bleeding, pain that stays, pain with fever, or anything that genuinely frightens her. Those go to her midwife or doctor, the same day, every time. Sorting serious from routine is not your job, and your line is never that it is probably nothing. Ask whether she wants you to make the call.
▸What she is going through
- Round ligament twinges may start.
- Possibly feeling great, enjoy this phase together.

▸Questions dads actually ask
Can she feel the baby move at 15 weeks pregnant?
Some people notice something around now, especially in a second or later pregnancy, usually a flutter that is easy to mistake for digestion. Plenty feel nothing until 18 to 22 weeks or later, and that whole range is normal. From the outside, with your hand on the bump, you will not feel anything for several weeks yet.
What should a dad do at 15 weeks pregnant?
Book a childbirth class before the convenient slots disappear, start the car seat and stroller research, and find out when the detailed mid-pregnancy scan is likely to fall. Then use the energy window. This is the easiest stretch of the pregnancy for a trip or a real night out, and it does not last.
Is it normal to still feel sick at 15 weeks pregnant?
It happens. Nausea eases for many people by the second trimester, but not for everyone, and a smaller number have severe ongoing vomiting that needs medical treatment rather than crackers. If she cannot keep fluids down, is losing weight, or feels faint, that is a call to her midwife or doctor rather than something to wait out.
