Husband not excited about pregnancy? It may not feel real to him yet.

If your husband is not excited about the pregnancy, it may simply not feel real to him yet: you are living with it every hour, and he has a test result and a date. For many dads it lands later, at a scan or when he can feel the baby move under his hand. Until then, give him one job that is his alone.

▸Why it may not feel real to him yet

In the first trimester you may be tired, sick and emotional because of hormonal changes. He feels none of that, and there is usually no bump yet. [NHS]

So he is working from information, not experience. Quiet or flat early on is not proof that he does not care. Some men also worry about money, work or whether they will be any good at this, and go quiet instead of saying so.

His side of this is written up for him on the decoder page Everyone's glowing and I feel... nothing yet.

▸Moments that often make it real

The dating scan, offered in England at around 10 to 14 weeks, is often the first time he sees the baby on a screen. [NHS]

The 20-week scan, usually between 18 and 21 weeks, checks the baby's growth and looks for 11 conditions. It is a long look at the baby, so it is worth him being in the room. [NHS]

You should start to feel movements between 16 and 24 weeks, and with a first baby it might not be until after 20 weeks. A few weeks later you may see your tummy move. Once movement shows from the outside, he can put a hand on the bump and feel it himself. [NHS · NHS]

Baby movements: when to call

If you have not felt the baby move by 24 weeks, tell your midwife or OB. If movements slow down, stop or change pattern, call your midwife or maternity unit straight away, even in the middle of the night. Do not wait until the next day. [NHS]

▸Give him one job of his own

Being asked to feel something rarely works. Being given something to own often does, because it puts him inside the pregnancy instead of watching it. Pick one:

  • His leave and paperwork. In the UK he must tell his employer the due date at least 15 weeks before the baby is due (UK paternity leave dates). In the US, FMLA needs 30 days' notice when leave can be planned (FMLA for dads).
  • The car seat: choosing it, fitting it and practising with it before the birth.
  • The hospital bag and the route to the hospital, including where to park.
  • Booking the time off for every scan, and being the one who keeps the calendar.

▸When it is more than not excited

The NHS notes that fathers and partners can also get depression after a baby is born. If he seems low, withdrawn or anxious for weeks, before or after the birth, encourage him to talk to a GP or doctor. [NHS]

If he is not just quiet but angry, controlling or threatening about the pregnancy, read the safety section on husband not supportive during pregnancy.

▸Common questions

Is it normal for my husband not to be excited about the pregnancy?

It is common for it to feel less real to him early on, because he has none of the physical signs you have. For many dads it changes at a scan or when they can feel the baby move. If he seems low or withdrawn for weeks, encourage him to talk to a doctor.

When will my husband feel connected to the baby?

There is no set point. Common turning points are the dating scan at around 10 to 14 weeks, the 20-week scan at around 18 to 21 weeks, and feeling the baby kick once movement shows from the outside.

Should I make him come to the scans?

Ask rather than make. The NHS says partners can come to appointments if you would like them to, and seeing the baby on screen can be the moment it becomes real for him.

What job should I give a husband who is not involved in the pregnancy?

Something he owns end to end with a deadline, such as filing his paternity leave or FMLA notice, choosing and fitting the car seat, or packing the hospital bag.
